Security Advice for Defence Staff

During a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

The broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official activities, including transport use to discussions practices.
